How KeyCodeNavigator works
Six short videos, about a minute each · iPhone and iPad
Each video shows one task in the app, step by step, with the steps written out under it. Start with adding a property, or jump to what you need:
- How to add a property
- How to enter codes
- How to set the gate and location pins
- How to share a code
- How to set a shared code to expire
- How the arrival alert shows your code
1How to add a property
Save a place once with its address, its pin on the map and its code. The arrival alert comes when you stop at that pin.
Step by step
- On Places, tap the round + button.
- Start typing the address where it says Start typing an address, then tap the right suggestion. It fills in the address and puts the pin on the map.
- Check the pin: zoom in to make sure it's on the right spot, then tap Use this location.
- Optional: add a Nickname, which is how the place shows in your list, and a Contact name and Phone for who to call about it.
- Under Access codes, fill in what it opens (Front door, for example) and the Code.
- Tap Save. The place is in your list.
No street address, like a storage unit or a gate at the back of a property? Tap No street address? Drop a pin instead. Then name the spot and drop the pin on the map.
2How to enter codes
Give each lock its own entry: the front door, a gate, a lockbox, an alarm. Add keypad symbols and a note, then copy the code at the door.
Step by step
- Open the place and tap Edit (the pencil).
- Tap Add another code.
- Type what it opens, then the code.
- If the keypad needs them, add symbols with the buttons under the code: ✓, #, * and ↵.
- Optional: add a note where it says Notes: lockbox spot, quirks, such as where the keypad is.
- Under Where this code is used, leave Property for a door or lockbox, or pick Gate.
- Tap Save.
- At the door, tap Copy next to a code. It stays ready to paste for two minutes, on this phone only.
3How to set the gate and location pins
The place's pin decides where the arrival alert comes. A neighborhood entrance gate can have a pin of its own, so the gate code comes up at the gate and the door code at the door.
Step by step
- Open the place and tap Edit.
- Tap the map. The place's pin opens.
- Tap the map where the door is, and the pin moves there. Then tap Use this location.
- For the gate's code, under Where this code is used, pick Gate, then Entrance for the neighborhood entrance. (Other gate is for a pool or amenity gate; it has no pin of its own.)
- Picking Entrance opens the gate map. On a place whose entrance gate is already set, tap Place the gate on the map.
- Tap the gate on the map, then tap Set the gate here.
- Tap Save. The gate alert comes about 3 seconds after you stop at the gate, with the gate code; the other codes come when you reach the place.
4How to share a code
Send someone exactly the codes and documents they need, and nothing else. They get a link, and the codes open only in the app.
Step by step
- Open the place and tap Share.
- Under Who is this for?, type their name. Only you see it.
- Pick what they get. Codes start selected: tap one to leave it out. Documents start unselected: tap one to add it.
- The first time you share, add Your name. It's what they see.
- Tap Text message or Email. Your messages app opens with the invite link; send it as usual. The message holds only the link and a line about the app, never a code.
- They're listed under Shared with. Change a code later and their copy updates too.
5How to set a shared code to expire
Give someone the codes until a date and time you choose. When that time comes, the codes clear from their phone.
Step by step
- Open the place, tap Share and type who it's for.
- Turn on End access automatically.
- Under Access ends, pick the date and time.
- Tap Text message or Email to send the invite.
- On their phone, they tap Add to my places and see the codes. No end date or countdown is shown to them.
- At the time you picked, the codes clear from their phone. They get no message about it. The place and its documents stay.
- For a share you've already sent, open the person's menu under Shared with and tap What they get… to change the end. Once it has ended, the same menu has Give access again… to send the codes back.
For full security, change the actual code after the visit.
6How the arrival alert shows your code
When you pull up and stop at a saved place, the alert comes with the code, even with the app closed.
Step by step
- In the app, go to Settings and turn on Show codes in notifications. With it off, the alert names the place only.
- Close the app. Arrival alerts come with the app closed.
- Pull up and stop. The You've arrived alert comes with the code.
- Press and hold the alert to see every code and its notes.
- Tap the alert to open the place: every code with Copy, and the contact with Call and Text. Within 10 minutes of the alert it opens without Face ID, since your iPhone was just unlocked to open it.
- Tap Done when you're in.
To see the code on the lock screen too, set Settings → Notifications → KeyCodeNav → Show Previews to Always on your iPhone. Arrival alerts come with a plan or the free trial.
